In 2017, Eric Greitens became the Governor of Missouri. With Peter Shumlin of Vermont and Jack Markell of Delaware leaving office, Greitens is the only current Jewish governor. (Also, the only Navy Seal governor. The only Jewish Navy Seal? Perhaps.)
Missouri has never had a Jewish governor before, which got us thinking: what states have had the pleasure? So we counted them all on this handy map:
We ignored governors with Jewish ancestry who we'd rank "Barely a Jew" at best; that would have given us at least Georgia, Virginia, and Iowa. That being said... it's a six-way tie for first place with two.
Not too exciting. If we really wanted to profile Greitens, maybe we should have just talked about his campaign ad where he shot a machine gun for 30 seconds straight...
It's a neat map.
(Editor's update, June 1, 2018: Greitens resigned amidst threads of impeachment. At least he got a place on our map...)
