Here's how you know you've been doing this for a long time: you finally get to profiling Herb Alpert, and you plan to write it based on the popular assumption that he is Latino, and you make up the fake LatinoOrLatino.com (LONL), and then you do a cursory search of your website and — bam! You already did that, in a profile written over a decade ago, of football player Tony Gonzalez, of all people. Damnation! Starting over, we guess...
Alpert (as of this writing, still kicking it at the age of 90) was a world-famous trumpeter with six number one hits. He even outsold the Beatles in 1966! Alpert holds the distinction of being the only musician with a vocal #1 ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumental #1 ("Rise", 1979).
And, yes, many think that Alpert is Latino, because of his band, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. Alpert came down to Tijuana in 1962, saw a bullfight, was inspired by the local sound, and the name was born. Despite the confusion, there is nothing Latino about him: Alpert is 100% Jewish. His parents immigrated to the US from what is now Ukraine and Romania.
