A relative recently requested that we profile Lisa Loeb, which sent us down the rabbit hole to "Reality Bites". (Loeb became the first ever artist without a recording contract to have a #1 single, with "Stay (I Missed You)" that played during that film's closing credits.)
If you have heard of "Reality Bites", we're gonna venture a guess that you were born between 1965 and 1980. It has been called the "quintessential Generation X movie". Actually, we're not sure why we're using quotes around that phrase. We just called it that. It's the quintessential Generation X movie.
The film centers around college graduate Winona Ryder and her friends, played by Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Steve Zahn. A young, pre-stubbled Ben Stiller directed, and also appeared in a key role. The plot? There is not much plot. The quartet of friends is trying to figure out what to do with their life and is not exactly succeeding.
The movie was made in 1994, so all those characters are all in their 50s now. Today's Zoomers are looking at Generation X the same way it looked at Boomers.
Reality, for lack of better words, bites.
